FAQs

What is Arcane Assets, exactly?

Arcane Assets is a web app that lets you mock-invest in Magic: The Gathering cards, in a similar way to how mock-investing platforms for stocks work: we keep track of the real, current market prices of most Magic cards, and allow you to “buy” and “sell” them as often as you’d like using pretend money/credits.

With this, you can test your Magic “market prediction” skills, without taking any financial risk!

Is Arcane Assets 100% free to use?

Yes, Arcane Assets is 100% free to use, and we’ll never ask for your payment details. Any time you see the dollar sign ($) in our platform is just because we keep track of the real market prices for all cards in the USA market.

How do I start mock-investing?

Just create a free account to get started! You’ll get a large amount* of credits right away that you can use to mock-invest in any Magic cards you’d like. A few rules to keep in mind:

  • You can only “buy” up to 100 copies of the same card

  • When “buying” cards, you pay a small amount of extra credits as commission

  • “Selling” cards has no commission

These rules are in place so it’s less viable to go “all-in” on a specific card, or to speculate on the prices of many extremely cheap cards.

You can keep mock-investing until all of your starting credits run out. After that, you'll have to wait until the next day to receive your daily boost ($50 every day, $200 on Mondays).

After that, keep coming back as often as you’d like to check on your portfolio, and keep making smart trades to climb the Leaderboard!

* New accounts receive $2.000 in credits, plus all of the daily boost income that other players have received until this point.

What do the numbers at the top of the screen mean?

Credits: the amount of “fake currency” that you have available to buy new cards. If you are out of credits, it’s currently only possible to get more of them by selling cards from your portfolio.

Portfolio (value): the total, current value of all the cards in your portfolio, put together. Keep in mind that this value is updated periodically and may not be accurate at all times.

Total balance: your credits and portfolio (value) put together. This is most relevant for the Leaderboard - for more information, see: How does the Leaderboard work?.

Day P/L: an indication of how much you’re Profiting or Losing from your mock-investments, in the last 24hs (approximately).

How does the Leaderboard work?

The Leaderboard is quite simple: the higher your Total balance is, the higher you’ll be placed.

Everyone starts with the same amount of credits in Arcane Assets, so the only way to get to the top is to be the best mock-investor and grow the value of your Portfolio as much as possible by making the right mock-trades, at the right time!

Which cards are available for mock-investing?

Most Magic cards released with Mercadian Masques (October 1999) or afterwards are available for mock-investing, excluding:

  • Foil versions

  • Special release or special art versions of regular cards (for example: event promo cards, all Secret Lair cards, Amonkhet Invocations, etc…)

  • Acorn (silver-bordered) cards

We exclude the cards mentioned above to keep the experience of using Arcane Assets as simple as possible, at least for now.

When are new cards added to Arcane Assets?

We add newly spoiled or released cards as quickly as possible, as long as they are already for sale (or pre-sale) in online trading card marketplaces, and they’re not excluded by the rules mentioned in Which cards are available for mock-investing?.

Can other users see my portfolio or transaction history?

Not by default! But if you'd like to share your mock-investments publicly, you can change your profile visibility settings when logged in.

I have a great idea for a new feature, how can I get in touch with you?

That’s great, we’re always open to new and interesting ideas! Please share your ideas with us on our Discord server!

I’ve found an error or a bug, how can I report this?

Please report it in the #bug-reports channel of our Discord server. Arcane Assets was released very recently and is still in beta, so you’re quite likely to find issues.

Do you have a mobile app?

Nope, Arcane Assets is web-only for now. But it should still work really well on any mobile browser!
